Wine Detail
'Pink Hit' Gewurztraminer
2007
Intensely fragrant with a uniquely perfumed bouquet, this Gewurztraminer has rose blooms and passion fruit characters on the nose and palate. It was made in a slightly sweet, fruity, medium-bodied style yet it retains a degree of restraint and elegance. The crisp, dry finish has a degree of zippy acidity that leaves the palate clean and ready for more. Gewurztraminer is one of the few wine varieties that truly make an excellent partner to the spicy, piquant flavours often found in Asian foods.
The Vintage
Drought conditions; frosts in spring, followed by late rains during harvest all lead to a generally difficult vintage for most of South Australia. While yields were down across the district, McLaren Vale seemed to avoid the worst of the extremes and harvest of most varieties was still of good condition. The Traminer (or Gewurztraminer as it should more precisely be known) came from our 'Home Block', a 65 acre (27ha) planting of mature vines situated some 5kms east of the McLaren Vale township. Varieties grown include Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The unusual grape colour of the gewurztraminer makes it stands out from the 'bunch'. The bunches of grapes take on a decidely vibrant, pink coral hue as they reach maturity - and hence the whimsical name 'Pink Hit'.
Vinification
Machine harvested in the cool of night, the fruit was delivered to the winery where a 'minimalist intervention' approach was taken with the wine - so the natural fruit flavours were retained. The grapes were promptly whole bunch pressed before being despatched for fermentation with a specially selected yeast strain. Fermentation was in stainless steel, and once completed the wine was clarified and stabilized, then quickly bottled to retain peak freshness.
