'The Numb Hand Pruner' Grenache (Temporarily Unavailable)

Grenache from the McLaren Vale region is known for its spicy, savoury flavours and the variety has enjoyed resurgence in interest from experts and novices alike over recent years. This example has a bouquet of cherries and raspberries with a full and flavoursome palate showing silky tannins and a long, lingering finish. The effects of the oak maturation are apparent without being overwhelming, and contribute a solid oak backbone and firm finish.
The Vintage
The fruit for this classic McLaren Vale Grenache came from a 12 hectare patch planted in 1965 by Antonio Conte and his sons Rocco and Modesto. The story goes that the countless days and weeks of hand pruning this vineyard long before mechanized power tools – led to mutterings of having numb hands at the end of the working day. Forty years on, the legacy of ‘The Numb Hand Pruner’ is a vineyard that is in its prime, producing fruit of stunning depth and varietal character.
The very warm conditions in late summer meant that fruit was slightly riper than usual, but the fruit/acid balance was excellent and grapes of exceptional condition were delivered to the winery after mechanical harvesting.
Vinification
The fruit was received at the winery at around 14.5ï‚° Baume and crushed immediately, with the juice allowed to steep on skins before pressing.
Fermentation on skins was carried out in small batch open fermenters for around seven days, with the wine then being despatched to a combination of new (7% American & 3% French) and prior-use French and American oak hogsheads for extended maturation. Twelve months later, the individual barrels were assessed and the finished wine blended and prepared for bottling.
