'Pink Hit' Gewurztraminer

Intensely fragrant with a uniquely perfumed bouquet, this Traminer has almost passion fruit-like characters on both the nose and palate. It was made in a fruity, full-flavoured style and yet retains a clean and dry finish. It is one of the few wine varieties that truly make an excellent partner to the spicy, piquant flavours often found in Asian foods.
The Vintage
The 2006 vintage saw some unpredictable weather conditions that provided a few challenges for some growers and winemakers in terms of the timing of harvest, but over-all the the grape quality was considered very good to excellent. There were heavy rains in spring and a mild early summer, followed by sustained warm weather in late February and early March which saw rapid development of flavour and sugar concentrations.
The Traminer (or Gewurztraminer as it should more precisely be known) came from our 'Home Block', a 65 acre (27ha) planting of mature vines situated some 5kms east of the McLaren Vale township. Varieties grown include Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but it is the Traminer that always elicits the greatest comment from vsitors. The bunches of Traminer grapes take on a decidely vibrant, pink, coral hue as they reach maturity - and hence the whimsical moniker 'Pink Hit'.
Vinification
Machine harvested when fully ripe, the Traminer grapes were delivered to the winery at around 13° Baume. The fruit was promptly crushed and pressed before being despatched for fermentation with specially selected yeast strains. The ferment was carried out in stainless steel, and once completed; the wine was clarified and stabilized, then held under an inert cap until bottling.
