'Hunt Rd' Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
2006

Deep, rich ruby colours give a hint of what is to come. The bouquet shows volumes of cherry and blackberry scents, with toasty oak providing a solid backbone. The palate follows with rich dark-berry tastes and hints of capsicum and dark chocolate, which are rounded out by cigar-box and oaky flavours. It is multi-layered and quite complex in character. The flavours are long lasting and the overall impression is one of smooth complexity and depth.

The Vintage

Mclaren Vale is a region that is particularly highly regarded for the quality of its red wines: Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache especially. This particular Caberent was grown on our Hunt Road block, which is one of the very early thoroughfares of the region. The block was planted in the 1970's. These thirty plus year old vines characteristically produce fruit of intense varietal flavour and deep colour. And so it was in 2006, when hot and dry weather conditions during harvest hastened ripening and flavour development in the berries. Thankfully the fruit had loads of natural acid to balance the fruit sugar concentrations, and the overall quality was regarded as very good to excellent.

Vinification

The Cabernet Sauvignon fruit was hand picked and delivered promptly to the winery at around 15.0° Baume, where it was crushed immediately, with the juice being allowed to sit on skins for an extended period before pressing. This was done to allow maximum colour and flavour pick up.
Fermentation on skins was carried out in small open fermenters for around seven days, with the wine then being despatched to a combination of new and prior-use French and American oak hogsheads. Ten percent of the oak was new French, 5% American, with the balance being a mixture of two and three year old barrels. Maturation period was just on fourteen months.

The International Wine Challenge offers producers the chance to have their wines endorsed using the most rigorous of judging processes - every wine entered is assessed at least twice, and the medal winners will be judged anywhere from 3 to 6 times. Staging such a seamless two-week competition is no easy task and requires a year of planning.

Incredibly young; with incredibly good fruit featuring chocolate blackberry and some red capsicum (reflecting it’s youth). The palate is young and very nicely balanced, not really showing the alcohol, which is healthily welcome. Nicely broad across the palate before a long finish. A great young wine that will be a greater wine as it matures. Drink 2010-2018 93/100 Excellent RRP $25
