Wine Detail
Shiraz Grenache Rose`
2005
This wine is a delight. It has a lovely, deep, rose-water colour that leads to a vinous, floral bouquet with hints of violets and spice. The palate continues the fragrant and perfumed impressions, with fresh, lively, zingy rosewater and Turkish delight flavours over a firm base of strawberries and raspberries.
Quite long-lasting, the palate is of mid-weight with a distinctly clean and dry crisp acid finish. This is no lolly water, but a wine bred of substance in a fruit driven, easy-drinking style. Excellent refreshment with or without food. Enjoy it now, in its youth.
The Vintage
The 2005 season was fairly typical of McLaren Vale. Good winter rains gave the subsoil a deep soaking while the ripening period of late summer and early autumn was generally mild to hot, with the region enjoying cooling evening sea breezes coming off St Vincent's Gulf. These maritime influences contribute to a gradual ripening process, enabling good varietal fruit flavours to build in the fruit while retaining excellent levels of natural acidity.
The grapes for this wine came from the second of our two vineyards, located three kilometres west of the township of McLaren Vale. The Shiraz was harvested from the 'Rock Hill' section of the vineyard, ten years old now and just begging to hit its straps in terms of flavour intensity. The Grenache component came from forty year old vines that produce consistently even, good quality fruit, year after year. Both varieties were machine harvested in late March.
Vinification
The grapes for this wine were received and processed separately with the individual parcels only brought together at the final blending stage before bottling. This enabled us to keep watch over colour, fruit flavour, residual sweetness and acid balance through all stages of production.
The wine has seen no wood, with fermentation carried out in temperature controlled stainless steel. After the two varieties completed fermentation, we conducted a number of trial blends with varying ratios of Shiraz to Grenache. In the end, a balance of 60% Shiraz and 40 % Grenache gave us the characteristics we were seeking.
