Wine Detail
Grenache Shiraz (sold out)
2004
The resultant wine is deep, intense purple, with a bouquet that exhibits perfumed mulberry/blackberry characters, as well as subtle toasted oak scents derived from the wood maturation.
The palate is a rich amalgam of fruit and other flavours, ranging from mulberry and blackberry through to liquorice and black pepper all of these in a deep, smooth and mouth-filling style. The sweet fruit flavours are long lasting and end off with a soft tannin finish.
This is a most appealing dry red wine and a fine example of what we can achieve from two varieties that seem especially suited to the local conditions. It is a great accompaniment for red-sauce pasta, red meats, hard cheeses and game dishes.
The Vintage
The 2004 season yielded excellent fruit in our two vineyards, with grapes for this wine coming from the vineyard located just three kilometres west of the township of McLaren Vale. Grenache comprised 70% of this blend and came from vines planted over 40 years ago. Gnarly old vines they are too, not pretty to look at, but the fruit is sensational!
The Shiraz (30%) came from 10 year old vines in a patch of the vineyard we endearingly call 'Rock Hill'. The widespread limestone, sharp, flat shale and occasional chunk of sandstone make it a difficult vineyard to work - and the vines can't find it too easy either, but we are rewarded each year with grapes of intense varietal flavour and good natural acid balance.
Vinification
The fruit was received ripe to very ripe; in batches, and crushed and processed separately so as to give us maximum control and flexibility over the make up of the final blend. Individual parcels were fermented on skins for around five days, with the majority being despatched to wood to complete the ferment. The individual wines then spent 18 months in a mix of French and American oak hogsheads before being assessed prior to blending and bottling.
